Uber's Entry into China

In 2011, Kalanick, and Garrett Camp co-founded Uber Technologies Inc., in San Francisco with the vision of offering a mobile app-based online personal car service to customers at the push of a button on their smartphone. As of 2013, Uber was operating in 41 countries and had established a firm foothold in the US. Uber entered the Chinese market in August 2013. China offered a big market with a huge and upwardly mobile middle class, low percentage of personal cars, and had the largest number of smartphone users in the world.

Analysts predicted that Uber would have a faster growth in China than in any other world market. Uber started its services in the country after running a test service in Shanghai to get a sense of the market in China. Uber initially concentrated its operations in China’s six largest cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu.
